Good Farming Practice Awards

In early 2005 the Society launched the Good Farming Practice Awards with sponsorship from Aberdeenshire Council. This competition is to stimulate further improvements to agriculture in the North-east. The award is judged through visits to the nominated farms by an independent judge. Balanced attention is given to a variety of aspects including the unit’s stock, crops, equipment, environmental management, enterprise and general impression.

The closing date for nominations is the 15th May 2017. All the nominated businesses are visited. The Press and Journal will run features on the three finalists during August where the winner is announced.

An open evening is held by kind permission of the previous years winner. These evenings are very interesting and give an insight into the winners enterprise.

The winners of the 2016 award were Roddy and Angela Catto of Hillhead of Muirton, Whitecairns.  Mr & Mrs Catto run a dairy farm, arable enterprise, beef suckler herd and have installed a biomass boiler.

The Catto Family have kindly agreed to host a farm walk open evening on Monday 29th May 2017 at 7pm.

The runner-up award went to Pete Watson, Darnford, Durris, who runs a beef herd of 440 suckler cows and followers.
