Promoting Excellence through Competition

The North East has a significant proportion of Scotland’s arable cropping land. The Society encourages good crop husbandry through two annual competitions, one for growing cereals and one for growing turnips and swedes. Valuable confidential feedback about the opinion of the judges and the scoring of each crop is given to all entries so that they may compare their crops with all the others entered and further improve their own techniques. The projects have attracted wide support and healthy rivalry for the trophies, prize money. Special awards are given for young farmers and for crops in Less Favoured Areas.   Good Farming Practice Award

In early 2005 the Society launched the Good Farming Practice Award with the sponsorship of

Aberdeenshire Council, to stimulate further improvements in the North-east. These awards are

judged through visits to the nominated farms by an independent judge who is well-known and

widely respected. Balanced attention is given to a variety of aspects including the unit’s stock,

crops, equipment, environment, general impression and enterprise.   More Information on the Award

RNAS North East Awards

Every year the Society brings together a panel from a range of leading organisations in the North East to help judge the Outstanding Service to Agriculture Awards. Anyone can be nominated buy submission of a citation to the Secretary.

The presentations are made in association with key sponsors at the annual awards luncheon in November which is a very popular social event in the farming year. On this distinguished occasion the Society also recognises three of the most promising agricultural students and apprentices. Anyone may attend the lunch by advance booking.
